Principal
At Wilson we are excited about the wonderful learning experience Wilson has to offer. To highlight just a few things we have the Suzuki Violin program that gives lessons to first through third grade students. We also have our keyboard laboratory that gives piano instruction to students in grades K-5. The major emphasis of our program is to implement three streams of philosophies. Student self-esteem is tied to increased academic proficiency. The second is the use of Direct Instruction. This program created by Sigfried Engelmann is the curriculum piece that drives the training of students in reading, writing and spelling. Through the use of these materials our students are finding success as readers as early as Kindergarten. The Direct Instruction approach and the emphasis on mastery by each student insures that all students are taught and that none are left behind. The third is Core Knowledge. We believe that there is a body of knowledge that students should know that will prepare them for academic success in the future. This knowledge is expected of students who enter college and beyond. We are implementing the segment of this body of knowledge that is appropriate at the elementary school level. We read classic literature, emphasize geography and are developing an interdisciplinary curriculum that will include fine arts and foreign language. Our goal is to create a kind of elementary humanities curriculum that makes our students successful when taking standardized testing that assumes a background of this knowledge. Exciting things are happening at Wilson and you are welcome to call and arrange a visit. We are a work in progress but we have a clear vision of who we are, what we are doing and where we are heading for the future.
